Liverpool v Galatasaray ends in worrying scenes after horror injury | Football | Sport
Liverpool’s commanding Champions League triumph over Galatasaray was halted in the final stages due to a gruesome injury. Galatasaray winger Noa Lang required extensive medical care after trapping his hand on the advertising boards at the edge of the pitch.
The 26-year-old collapsed onto the grass, clutching his finger in excruciating pain with blood gushing from what appeared to be a substantial cut. Medics hurried to his aid and he was ultimately stretchered off, holding his hand above his head. TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist expressed his concern for the Dutch player and was surprised by the amount of attention he received.
McCoist stated: “I could tell there was a significant problem because one of the girls behind there, I’m not sure if she’s a photographer but you could see her face, the way she reacted.”
He was left on the side of the pitch for an extended period as his thumb was bandaged up. ESPN claim that he has been taken to hospital for more treatment.
As he left the pitch on a stretcher, Liverpool fans gave him a standing ovation, with the home crowd in a jubilant mood as they led 4-0 at the time.
Lang’s side led 1-0 going into the secong leg, but suffered multiple injuries and were eventually overpowered by their English counterparts.
Dominik Szoboszlai got one of the four Liverpool goals and was asked about comparisons to Steven Gerrard after the match.
“It’s a nice comparison to have,” he told TNT Sports. “When I was a child, I was watching him play, and I’m now wearing the number 8.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling and I think it’s an inspiration to all of us. A club legend, nothing to say. I’m happy to play for this club.”
He broke the deadlock on the night before Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah added goals, after Salah had missed a penalty in the first half.
