I tried Mini Eggs from 6 UK supermarkets – winner better than Cadbury

I tried six alternatives to Cadbury Mini Eggs, and one supermarket own-brand name came out on top. I tried seven packs of mini egg-like products in total, including the famous Cadbury pack. While the beloved British chocolate brand ranked highly, I actually found that I preferred two others slightly more. This comes after my Easter egg taste test, where one own-label supermarket egg was crowned my highlight for Easter 2026.

I had seen much discussion online about Mini Egg alternatives, namely the Aldi ones that some people said were better than Cadbury. I was excited to try these ones and compare them to Cadbury, but I’m also not one to give in to internet hype. So I was as sceptical as I was open-minded. I also headed to Lidl, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Asda and Morrisons to try other Mini Egg alternatives. I ranked them based on flavour (10 points), appearance (5 points) and size (5 points), allowing me to come up with a final score out of 20. Here are the results.

7. Lidl Mister Choc Mini Eggs

Price: 99p (80g)/£3.29 (270g)

At 99p, I was pretty delighted at the checkout. Based on the packaging, I felt like I was promised a pretty decent alternative to Cadbury Mini Eggs. However, these ones, unfortunately, did not live up to my expectations. They weren’t horrendous, and the pack was indeed finished by my friends and me over a few days, but there was much to be desired about these ones.

The shell was a bit too sweet and tasted a bit artificial. You get that artificial smell as soon as you open the bag. It needed a slightly stronger flavour. But at 99p per pack, I can’t be too angry at this experience.

  • Final score: 9.5/20

6. Mummy Meegz Chickee Eggs

Price: £2.75 (80g) at Morrisons

An alternative to Cadbury Mini Eggs for the vegans among us is the Mummy Meegz Chickee Eggs, available in Waitrose, Morrisons, Asda and various online snack retailers. For any plant-based friends or family, these are a decent alternative. But for the average Mini Egg fan, they leave a bit more to be desired.

The shell has an almost fruity taste, and it felt like it was all crunch without the chocolatey smoothness that we look forward to when biting into mini eggs.

  • Appearance: 4/5
  • Size: 4/5
  • Flavour: 2.5/10
  • Final score: 10.5/20

5. ASDA Easter Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs

Asda’s alternative, at £1, is among the decent, affordable options, scoring more than 50%. But there are definitely better ones out there. While the chocolate tastes okay, it could have a stronger flavour. Dare I say, it tasted cheap? That’s to be expected, I guess, with a £1 pack of mini eggs.

I just really didn’t get much of a chocolate flavour, and tasted more of the shell. I asked a couple of friends to try them, and they had similar reactions once biting into these little eggs.

  • Size: 3.5/5
  • Flavour: 4.5/10
  • Final score: 11/20

4. Aldi Choceur Mini Eggs

Aldi’s entry was one I was looking forward to, based on what I’ve seen online, but the flavour didn’t hit the way I hoped it would. Like some of the others on the list, it had a slightly artificial flavour that was just too powerful to not notice. Additionally, it needs a stronger chocolate flavour.

Overall, these eggs were a bit too crunchy, and they were missing that smooth chocolate flavour we love about these kinds of snacks. A nice balance of crunch and smoothness is essential for a good mini egg, and unfortunately, these ones miss the mark.

  • Size: 3.5/5
  • Flavour: 4/10
  • Final score: 11.5/20

3. Cadbury Mini Eggs

Now we jump up in the ranking, and we get to the really good stuff. As expected, the Cadbury mini Eggs were a hit. I knew this would be the case, having eaten them before. However, when I tallied up the final scores, a number three spot surprised me.

Compared to the top two on my list, these eggs had the exact right amount of crunch compared to smooth chocolate. With others, the shell and the chocolate felt like two different entities, but these eggs felt like more of a combination. The chocolate tasted creamy and rich, but these eggs just missed out on a top two spot.

  • Appearance: 4/5
  • Size: 3.5/5
  • Flavour: 7.5/10
  • Final score: 15/20

2. M&S Speckled Eggs

M&S’s entry was just slightly better than Cadbury’s, and cost less for a larger pack. These had the right amount of sweet crunch, but the real star of the show is the smooth, rich chocolate inside. For under £2, it really feels like a luxury experience.

Plus, the creamy chocolate flavour hits instantly, so you get to the enjoyment straight away. There is a generous amount of chocolate inside, which has to be appreciated in today’s shrinkflation climate.

  • Appearance: 3/5
  • Size: 4/5
  • Flavour: 8.5/10
  • Final score: 15.5/20

1. Waitrose Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs

At £1.60 per 100g, this pack isn’t actually much more expensive than all of the others, and you are getting bang for your buck. These small eggs, which are described as tiny on the packaging, didn’t give me much hope when looking at them. But when I threw a few of them into my mouth, it absolutely made sense.

The chocolate inside the egg is by far the best out of all the eggs I tasted, while the soft shell could be slightly crunchier. But for the size of these eggs, the lack of crunch wasn’t too much to fuss over. The chocolate tastes like pure luxury.

  • Appearance: 4/4
  • Size: 4/5
  • Flavour: 9/10
  • Final score: 17/20
