Vet reveals the 3 best dog breeds to own – ‘lazier than you might expe
A vet has recommended three dog breeds perfect for first time owners. While dog ownership is very popular across the UK, it’s important to pick the right breed that fits with your lifestyle.
It is estimated that up to 40% of households in Britain own at least one dog, with numbers rising significantly in recent years. A survey last year found 94% of people consider dogs part of the family while 80% see them as their best friend. However, it’s essential to select an appropriate breed to ensure a harmonious relationship and reduce problems caused by boredom or mismatch.
Tom, who is known as things_can_only_get_vetter on Instagram, shared a video of three dog breeds he’d consider having as a vet. He said to his 2,150 followers: “Here are three breeds I absolutely would have as a small animal veterinary surgeon.”
Here are the breeds he recommends and why.
Despite having a reputation for being active dogs, Tom explained that greyhounds are lazier than you think. He said they make the ideal pet as they’re affectionate and easily adapt to different lifestyles.
He explained: “The first is the greyhound. I know a lot of people who want a big dog but don’t have the lifestyle that fits a big dog. There’s a million greyhounds out there that need a new home and, in general, they’re much lazier than you might expect.
“They can fit with most excercise regimes. They’re happy with a quick sprint or a long walk and they’ll spend a lot of their time sleeping. They’re incredibly affectionate and, unfortunately, they do get bad teeth so I’d recommend nailing down that dental care from day one.”
Labradors are considered one of the top registered dog breeds in the UK. They are known for their friendly and intelligent behaviour, as well as versatility as both family and assistance dogs.
Tom said: “The second dog I’d recommend is the humble labrador. They do have some health issues so I’d definitely recommend getting to know what the hips and elbows of their parentage was doing.
“However, you know what you’re getting. They’re incredibly bouncy and affectionate dogs and they will fit most active lifestyles and houses with a bit of space. They’re really lovely and quite predicable as a first dog.”
Border terriers are popular for their affectionate and cheerful nature. They make for excellent companions for both families and individuals, suiting lifestyles in the city or countryside.
Tom explained: “Finally, I absolutely love a border terrier. They are cheeky and daft and will fit so many lifestyles. They don’t need a massive amount of exercise and the health issues they get are limited compared to other breeds.
“They are an absolute delight when we see them in practice and I think they’re an excellent choice for a first time dog owner. I couldn’t recommend them enough.”
