Canary Islands horror as tourist, 84, dead after ‘dating scam’ | World | News
An 84-year-old tourist has died in the Canary Islands after a date arranged via a dating app turned into a fatal robbery. Police on Gran Canaria have confirmed they arrested a man yesterday on suspicion of murder.
The victim, who has not been named, was on holiday in the Canaries. His nationality has not yet been released. Officers believe the alleged killer used dating apps to target older men, deceive them and steal their valuables. National police suspect he may have carried out similar scams on other tourists before.
The 84-year-old had downloaded a dating app while staying in the resort of Maspalomas on Gran Canaria. He arranged what he believed would be a casual meeting with another man.
Unbeknown to him, the individual’s real intention was to rob him.
The pair met at the victim’s apartment last month. During the evening, the suspect allegedly tried to steal valuables but was confronted by the elderly tourist.
A struggle broke out, during which the 84-year-old was pushed, lost his balance, fell and hit his head. He died from the impact.
The alleged murderer, a Spaniard, fled the scene and went into hiding on the neighbouring island of Tenerife. After two weeks on the run, he was arrested yesterday by officers from the National Police Homicide Group.
Police say they have recovered messages between the victim and the suspect. Investigators believe the man made a habit of using dating apps to lure men — often tourists — before robbing them.
One reported victim claims he was stolen from to the tune of €20,000 (£17422).
The suspect has been remanded in custody while the investigation continues.
