Over a decade on from the release of Bloodborne, a sequel or remake is nowhere in sight – but patient fans are being rewarded with another exciting development in the form of an R-rated animated movie.

The project was announced at CinemaCon and is set to be a joint production between PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation. A familiar face is signed on to direct the movie with none other than Seán McLoughlin, otherwise known as the YouTube star JackScepticEye, taking on the directorial reins.

Variety reports that Sony Pictures president, Sanford Panitch, promises that the animated adaptation of Bloodborne will remain ‘very true’ to the original game. With the R-rating already locked in, we imagine that likely means just as much blood, guts and gore that the original game portrayed.

McLoughlin has long since established that Bloodborne is his favourite game of all time, having posted endless videos of himself playing through the title since its release.

The animated movie director posted on the Bloodborne subreddit shortly after the project’s announcement, saying: “I am producing this project and you have no idea how incredibly excited I am to finally be able to talk about it! I am going to do everything in my power to make this the BEST Bloodborne adaptation possible.

“Not only is it my favourite game ever made but I know how truly passionate the fans of this game are and how much hunger they have for more of it.

“I can’t share much about the project right now but man does it feel good to let you all know it’s happening!”

Bloodborne was a soulslike game developed by FromSoftware and Sony’s Japan Studio. Released on the PlayStation 4 back in 2015, it’s widely renowned as one of the best soulslike games FromSoftware has ever produced.

Fans appreciate its faster paced combat mechanics, but ultimately fell in love with the gothic world of Yarnham. Its dark and atmospheric corners are filled to the brim with grim lore and heinous monsters to slay.

Despite Bloodborne’s popularity, it’s currently only available to play in its original PlayStation 4 format with a choppy framerate and low resolution by today’s modern standards. A remake or remaster has long been requested by its fanbase, but one has never materialised.

The reason for this is unknown, but it’s thought that FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has a soft spot for the title and would like to keep a close eye on any sort of remake project himself. The FromSoftware team is currently working on a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive title, The Duskbloods, as well as supporting the Elden Ring Nightrein live service offering.

There’s currently no word on a release date for the Bloodborne movie adaptation, so it sounds like we have a while to wait just yet.

With Sony finally utilising that Bloodborne IP, it’s sure to rekindle hope among fans that a remake, remaster or re-release of the original game could show up alongside the movie’s release.
