Shelter staff heartbroken after scanning dog’s microchip
A kind-hearted passer-by spent two days attempting to safely catch her before bringing her to a local rescue centre, where staff described her survival as nothing short of a “miracle”. Upon her arrival, the team did what they always do – scanned her microchip in the hope of reuniting her with her owner. Initially, it appeared to be a straightforward case, yet the truth proved far more emotional.
Upon making contact, her owner revealed Isabelle had been missing for two months – but owing to deteriorating health, she was no longer capable of looking after her. This meant the ageing dog, who had already endured so much, was now in need of a new home.
Footage circulated on social media showed Isabelle arriving at the shelter visibly distressed and disorientated, cowering beneath a bed and refusing to make eye with staff and volunteers. Staff noted it is a reaction they witness all-too frequently, as dogs struggle to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings.
Fortunately, Isabelle didn’t have to wait long – after just over a week in care, she was transferred to an adoption centre, where everything changed almost immediately. A woman noticed her that very same day and was instantly smitten, deciding to take her home on the spot.
Sharing their thoughts online, one person said: “It breaks my heart to see a dog so sad and confused – alone in a cage.” Another added: “So glad she was adopted. Hope she gets her happy ending.”
And a third wrote: “Thank goodness someone took her. What a precious little soul.”
One more user added: “I don’t care what happens in my life. I will never give up on my pets. Death is the only thing that could separate me from them. They saved me when I needed saving. I owe them my life.”
A final user said: “I’m so happy she has a new home, I was heartbroken.”
Giving up your pet
Surrendering a pet can sometimes be the correct course of action — particularly once every conceivable alternative has been exhausted. Nevertheless, it remains crucial to prioritise the animal’s welfare and guarantee they are transferred to a reputable rescue centre where they will receive proper care.
The RSPCA says: “Give your pet the best chance of finding a happy home: Contact the original seller to see if they would be willing to take your pet back. Contact a charity or rescue centre experienced in matching each pet with the right owner.
“If your local RSPCA branch can’t help, other charities are often able to. There are many organisations that can help you rehome your dog or cat.
“They all have different procedures, so research carefully before giving them a pet you’re no longer able to care for.”
