Burnley relegated from Premier League after Man City defeat | Football | Sport

Burnley have been condemned to relegation from the Premier League after succumbing to defeat against Manchester City. The Clarets become the second side to be dropped into the Championship, following bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers, whose fate was sealed on Monday night.

Scott Parker’s men needed at least a draw against title-chasing City on Wednesday evening to keep their survival hopes alive for another fixture.

However, the defeat leaves them stranded on 20 points, a daunting 13 behind West Ham in 17th place with just four games left to play. Burnley have claimed victory in just four of their 34 league outings this season, picking up a paltry two points from a possible 24.

They sit three points clear of Wolves, meaning a battle to avoid the wooden spoon is now the only remaining objective for Parker’s squad, who have now suffered three Premier League relegations in five years, cementing their reputation as the ultimate yo-yo club.

Burnley endured five consecutive top-flight campaigns before dropping into the Championship in 2021/22. They bounced back immediately under Vincent Kompany, only for the Belgian to fail to stave off the drop in 2023/24 before departing for Bayern Munich.

Parker has now mirrored his predecessor’s trajectory – storming to Championship promotion with an impressive 100 points and a formidable defensive record last season, only to come crashing straight back down, unable to cope with the considerable step up in quality.

Parker has managed to retain his position, but cut a crestfallen figure after his side squandered a 1-0 lead at half-time to suffer a 4-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.”

I’m a fan as well, I understand the passion and emotion, it’s been a disappointing season,” he said. “At times we haven’t given them much to cheer about and at times I would have liked more in terms of the general getting behind us but I don’t expect that really.”
