Gatwick Airport traveller picks up snacks for but is floored by cost

A man who purchased a series of snacks from a Gatwick Airport shop has revealed his astonishment after it cost him a small fortune. Carmie Sellitto turned to Instagram while visiting the airport’s WH Smith branch before his 18-hour flight.

“I need to buy a bunch of snacks that will last me the 18 hours, but for some reason this place is so expensive and I have no idea why,” he explained in a video. After grabbing a basket, Carmie made his way to the aisles where he selected a packet of dried mangos carrying a steep £6 price tag.

“I’ve picked up some sweet chilli rice crackers and I’m going to go for some luxury nut and raisin mix,” he went on. “The fact that that’s probably going to be £20 already is actually a bit disgusting.”

Carmie then voiced his disbelief at the £5 sticker attached to a large bag of Haribo Tangfastics, while also questioning who would be prepared to spend £10 and £14 for a giant pack of Mentos mints and Chupa Chups lollipop respectively.

He subsequently displayed £18 boxes of Ferrero Rochers, declining the chance to buy one – instead adding a watermelon-flavoured Push Pop and Smints to his basket.

“I’ve got to go for a Reese’s White Cup,” Carmie went on as he browsed the confectionary. “And I’ll get some [Galaxy] Minstrels.”

Regarding drinks, he made the most of a three-for-two promotion on bottles of Actiph Water, before selecting a packet of Rennie in case he suffers from heartburn during the flight. Reduced packets of Cheez-Its proved a pleasant discovery, as did 20% off bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk Biscoff – both of which found their way into Carmie’s basket.

He also scooped up packets of Snack a Jacks and Proper Popcorn, while grabbing a bottle of strawberry-flavoured Vitamin Well and a bar of Cadbury & More Nutty Praline Crisp.

“I think we’re done,” Carmie eventually concluded as he made his way to the self-checkouts. “And now what you’ve all been waiting for,” he concluded. “How much did I spend? I spent £58.70. Let me know if you think that’s worth it. I can’t believe how much I spent.”

Responding on Instagram, one user quipped: “Probably cheaper to fly first class!” A second person remarked: “That’s why I mainly take my own snacks. But I do like a Boots meal deal at the airport.”

A third noted to Carmie: “You bought four drinks, I thought drinks are included on a long haul flight, most people just get a meal deal or organised people take their own snacks.”

While a fourth Instagram user declared: “Omg no it’s not worth it. You could’ve bought all the snacks before you went to the airport. Which would have probably cost you about £20.”
