F1 and Sky Sports drop major announcement over TV coverage | F1 | Sport

Sky Sports have extended their deal as the exclusive broadcaster for F1 in the UK and Ireland for another five years. The announcement was made today, with Sky Sports and F1 both issuing a statement confirming the deal will expire in 2034.

In 2012, Sky formed the Sky Sports F1 channel which was part of their acquisition rights. The channel has remained as the home of F1 coverage in the UK and Ireland ever since. As well as F1 fans who subscribe to Sky Sports, it also broadcasts every GP on NowTV, while also including live coverage of Formula 2, Formula 3, F1 Academy and Porsche Supercup. The news was confirmed by spokespersons for both Sky Sports and F1.

Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali said: “Sky has always been a dedicated, trusted and passionate partner since we began our relationship many years ago.

“Their world-leading approach to live broadcasting, content creation, behind the scenes analysis led by a truly amazing group of on-screen talent has made the difference in continuing to grow our sport in the UK, Ireland and Italy and I am delighted we will be taking our partnership into the next decade.”

In addition, Dana Strong, group chief executive Sky, said: “We’re proud of the role we’ve played in supporting the sport’s growth through world-class storytelling, innovation and long-term investment.

“This new agreement secures Sky as the home of Formula 1 for years to come, as the sport enters an exciting era with more British talent on the grid and rising stars like Kimi Antonelli. I want to thank Stefano and the F1 team for our continued partnership, which we’re excited to build on in the years ahead.”

Last weekend, Sky broadcast the chaotic Miami GP, which was dominated by high profile crashes, inclement weather in the build-up and another iconic Martin Brundle grid walk.

Kimi Antonelli won the GP, but it may better be remembered for Pierre Gasly being tipped over and Max Verstappen spinning out of control on turn two on the first lap.

It was perhaps fitting Antonelli took the victory, as Sky also extended their deal to be the home of F1 in Italy for five years as well. Their deal in the home country of Antonelli will last until 2032.

The next GP will be the Canadian GP, which takes place in Montreal between May 22 and May 24.
