Rory McIlroy showed what he’s about in telling Truist Championship act | Golf | Sport
Rory McIlroy has made his return to the PGA Tour following his Masters victory and is presently taking part in the Truist Championship. At last year’s tournament, his loyalty to close friend Shane Lowry was there for all to see.
At last year’s event, McIlroy finished seventh, but once the tournament concluded, his focus swiftly shifted to monitoring how his peer Lowry was faring. The Irishman remained in the hunt for the trophy until the 18th hole and McIlroy demonstrated the depth of their friendship through his encouragement.
McIlroy had just secured his maiden Masters crown when he competed at the Truist 12 months ago and while he harboured hopes of defending the title he claimed in 2024, he ultimately finished seventh. The 37-year-old made his way to the clubhouse upon completion, but remained at the venue to observe then-leader Sepp Straka go head-to-head with his friend Lowry.
The duo entered the final round sharing the lead at 14 under and they remained locked together on the back nine approaching the 16th. However, Lowry missed a par putt to drop a shot while Straka did not. Then, on the 18th, Lowry three-putted to finish level with Justin Thomas in joint second, ultimately falling two strokes short of the eventual champion.
In a CBS behind-the-scenes clip, McIlroy can be seen with his hands on his head after watching his friend fail to secure victory, demonstrating just how deeply he cares for his fellow competitor.
McIlroy displayed further sportsmanship by heading back out onto the course to congratulate Straka, who prevailed by two strokes. Having completed his own round, McIlroy revealed he intended to remain and watch Lowry complete his, while paying tribute to his friend’s steady form.
“I’ve seen a big difference in Shane since he started living here (Florida) full-time,” said McIlroy. “We practice and play together so much at home. Just the back-and-forth from Ireland is tough. Even this time of the year, it’s still hard to practice over there.
“I just feel like I’ve seen such a big improvement in his consistency week to week because of where he lives, being able to practice in great conditions on great golf courses, get in games with the likes of myself or whoever lives down in Jupiter. It’s been amazing as his friend to see him play so well and so consistently.”
