Man Utd transfer target proves why Liverpool should make Xabi Alonso next manager | Football | Sport
It’s difficult to remember a summer where so much across European football hangs in the balance. From player transfers to managerial moves, there are several top clubs with big decisions to make.
It’s already being touted that at least one of the involved parties will be shipped in the summer, which could be music to the ears of the Manchester United hierarchy, given they’re reportedly eyeing up a move for Tchouameni. United are set to lose Casemiro in the summer, meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte is also being linked with a move away from Old Trafford, just two years after joining the Red Devils.
The three-time European champions have already secured their Champions League spot for next season, meaning their transfer coffers will be topped up ahead of the summer transfer window. But while it might make landing Tchouameni easier, the Valverde saga could also influence Liverpool’s decision to sack Arne Slot and hire Xabi Alonso.
Alonso took plenty of stick following his brief time in charge of Real Madrid, with many saying it proved he wasn’t cut out to manage a team of that calibre. Having been appointed following a hugely successful stint in charge of Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, Alonso only lasted until January when he was let go by the record European champions.
But as news emerges of a crisis behind closed doors at Real Madrid, with several players believed to be at odds with each other, it’s clear the biggest problem in the dressing room wasn’t Alonso. The Spanish coach was on a hiding to nothing joining Real Madrid, given the squad is evidently filled with egos and hasn’t presented a united front all season.
His six months in the Spanish capital shouldn’t be used to discredit the work he did at Leverkusen, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most promising coaches. Slot might’ve delivered a league title last year, but Alonso has the potential to define management in European football across the next decade, and Liverpool shouldn’t run the risk of someone else benefiting from his brilliance.
