‘Dangerous’ energy meter move could land you in jail for five years | Personal Finance | Finance
Households trying to dodge soaring energy bills are being warned they could face jail, hefty fines – and even risk death.
Energy regulator Ofgem has issued a stark alert over the growing problem of “energy theft”, where people tamper with gas or electricity meters to cut what they pay. It warned that the illegal practice is not only a crime but a major safety hazard that can lead to fires, explosions and serious injury. In a public warning, the watchdog said: “Tampering with your meter is illegal and could be dangerous.”
Energy theft is estimated to cost households across Great Britain more than £1.4billion a year – a burden ultimately picked up by bill payers.
Officials say some fraudsters are even offering to “fix” meters to reduce bills, but households are being urged not to fall for it.
Deadly risks inside the home
Experts say interfering with meters can have catastrophic consequences. Gas meter tampering can trigger leaks, fires and explosions, while electricity meters that have been altered can overheat, spark or cause electrocution.
Warning signs include unusual wiring, damaged casings, meters running without credit, or even the smell of gas.
In extreme cases, sparks, smoke or burning smells near a meter could indicate immediate danger.
The risks are not confined to homes. Suspected tampering has also been flagged in public venues such as pubs, cafés and community halls.
Secret scams and criminal penalties
Households are being told to be wary of anyone offering to cut their energy bills by altering meters, which is a tactic regulators say is a clear red flag for illegal activity.
Those caught face severe consequences, including prosecution, unlimited fines and prison sentences of up to five years.
Consumers who suspect energy theft can report it anonymously via the Stay Energy Safe service or by phone.
The crackdown comes as pressure on household finances continues, but officials insist cutting corners in this way is a dangerous gamble that could end in tragedy or even a spell behind bars.
