Man Utd news: Fernandes statement as club make transfer announcement | Football | Sport

The Portugal international found himself at the centre of transfer rumours last summer. Yet Fernandes has made his intentions crystal clear; he intends to remain at Old Trafford to fulfil the ambitions he set upon joining from Sporting CP in January 2020. Meanwhile, United have been linked with a swoop for Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi ahead of the summer transfer window. Here, Express Sport rounds up some of the most significant stories surrounding the club.

The United skipper has insisted the side must be targeting football’s greatest honours next season. Fernandes reaffirmed that his decision to join the club was driven by the pursuit of major silverware, and he insists anyone coming in during the summer transfer window will feel the same.

“Obviously going into next season, we all know that the aim of this club always has to be winning,” Fernandes said. “I think in the first place when a player chooses to come to Man United it’s not because you just want to wear the shirt.

“That’s a big feeling and it’s a big thing to walk out at Old Trafford and that was the dream I had but I had that dream because I knew the club could win things and be close to winning the Premier League and Champions League. That’s why I came to this club.”

The midfielder has claimed the FA Cup and League Cup during his tenure in England, while also agonisingly falling short of lifting the Europa League trophy last year. Nevertheless, he remains driven to secure further major honours with United.

“I speak out whenever I want on what I want to achieve and what I want to achieve is winning the league and winning the Champions League,” Fernandes explained.

Bournemouth make exit announcement

Bournemouth have confirmed that defender Senesi will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer. The Argentina international, 29, who has attracted interest from United and several other Premier League sides, is set to become a free agent.

Senesi joined the Cherries in 2022 and has made 126 appearances for the club. While his next destination is sure to spark considerable speculation, the centre-back has stressed that he remains fully focused on helping Andoni Iraola’s side clinch a European spot.

In a Bournemouth club statement, Sensei said: “From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this club. I’m proud of everything we achieved over the last four years and I’m grateful for the support the fans have always given me.

“AFC Bournemouth will always hold a special place for me and I will look back at my time here with fond memories. For now, there are still two big games left of the season and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”
