Roy Keane ‘jealous and bitter’ as Man Utd icon rains on Michael Carrick | Football | Sport

Roy Keane has been labelled ‘jealous and bitter’ after the former Manchester United ace aired concerns about Michael Carrick’s appointment. It’s expected Carrick will be given the reins on a full-time basis after impressing following his appointment as interim manager at the beginning of the year.

Carrick has helped guide United to Champions League qualification and recorded the Red Devils’ highest finish in the Premier League since 2023. United had been linked to the likes of Andoni Iraola, Julian Nagelsmann and Oliver Glasner, but barring a last-minute change of heart, it will be Carrick leading United into next season and beyond.

However, Keane isn’t sure it’s the right course of action, with the tough-tackler saying on Sky Sports: “So they’re the big challenges and obviously over the next few months any time they have a little sticky patch, the issue will be, has he got the experience to cope with it?

“He’s managed Middlesbrough previously, he’s had spells at United. He’s got the opportunity and good luck to him, if he does well fantastic. I’ve got my doubts but we’ll wait and see. It seems like a safe decision from the club’s point of view because their previous decision backfired on them. Carrick’s come in and settled everybody down and they’ve won some football matches. To me, it’s the safest decision and sometimes there’s nothing wrong with that.”

It’s safe to say the United fans didn’t take kindly to Keane’s assessment of the situation. Writing on X, @sretfordrd remarked: “Still bitter if it was Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] with that start he would have some praise for him.”

@desta_desta11 chipped in with: “These jealous ‘Fergie babies’ and ex-players don’t like seeing anything positive about United. They just want attention by constantly talking negatively about the club. Nobody cares whether Keane doubts Carrick or not.”

@Real_Movator kept it brief with: “Jealousy will kill you, Roy Keane.”

@stevirush26 added: “Who cares…. You probably feel that it should have been you in his position…. Encourage and support him that’s what you should do.”

United have one match of the Premier League season to play, with the 20-time English champions set to close their season away from home against Brighton. United have already been touted as a potential outsider for the title next season, with INEOS expected to invest heavily in the playing squad.
