Households with BT, Virgin and TalkTalk issued broadband warning
A broadband expert has issued fresh advice to UK households who are customers of some of the biggest home internet providers. Broadband contracts vary in price, and the quality of the service can vary greatly as well. The biggest four providers of broadband in the UK are Virgin, BT, TalkTalk and Sky. Many customers are happy with the products they get from these providers, but some people are not aware that there might be better-value deals out there, where the connection and customer service are just as good or even better.
That is according to a broadband expert, who urged households in the UK to never assume that the ‘Big Four’ always have the best deals and connection. Together, these providers serve more than 20 million households across the country. However, there are plenty of other providers on the market, some only covering small areas of the country and others providing connections to households across the country.
Yvette Fletcher is a researcher at the consumer group Which?, and leads the group’s telecoms content. As an expert in broadband, she advises customers to always shop around and look beyond Sky, BT, Virgin and TalkTalk.
“Customers often stick with them for years, and many have never been with a different provider,” she said. “But year after year, our research shows that their customers not only pay more, they’re also some of the least satisfied.
“Smaller providers offer cheaper deals and better customer service. If you’re in the market for a new provider, it’s worth exploring whether there’s a less well-known provider that can offer you a better deal.”
She also said that people should look out for local providers, which often provide full fibre broadband, the most reliable kind.
The winner in that research was Zen Internet, a small provider with a little over 200,000 customers across the country, as reported back in 2024. That is rather tiny compared to BT, which has a customer base of more than 8 million in Britain.
Plus, a number of other providers ranked higher than the big four. According to the Which? survey, the best broadband providers in the UK, ranked best to worst, are:
