England boss Thomas Tuchel has lifted the lid on the phone calls he had to make to the players he left out of his squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is among the players who are not included for this summer’s tournament in North America, while Cole Palmer and Phil Foden are also left behind.

Tuchel was quizzed on England‘s official social media channels by former striker Daniel Sturridge, with the Three Lions boss asked why he decided to leave out such high-profile names.

Among those also missing out are midfielder Adam Wharton, playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White and defenders Lewis Hall, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Shaw.

Tuchel opened up on the conversations he has had with those players, confirming he has spoken to them.

“Difficult, difficult phone calls because I respect all of and I respect them as players, personalities,” Tuchel said.

“All of them have been in camp with us, all have been excellent. A lot of them and all of them you named deserved a call up from this list of 55. To reduce it was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult and even in the phone calls I felt the emotion.

“So I called all the players that were with us in camp at least one time I wanted to show the appreciation and the respect for what they have done. “A lot of them, like I said, deserved to be with us.

“In the end we went back to the evidence that we had and the evidence we had was that in September, October and November where we made some bigger calls in September and repeated the camp with the same group and then had only very few changes in November.

“That felt like a bit of fresh air and younger players who played with hunger and excitement. It was a good mix between youthfulness and senior partnership and it brought the best out of the players. We want to recreate that kind of spirit.”

Speaking in a press conference after the announcement was made, Tuchel stressed that his squad were ready to go.

“I can assure every fan in the country that we have 26 100 per cent committed players in camp with us who know their role, are ready to buy into their role on and off the pitch and who are ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish,” he said.
