French wildcard Arthur Gea told officials that he was going to “s*** on the court” in the middle of his first-round match against Karen Khachanov. Gea called the doctor during the opening set and, in French, told him he had the “s***s”.

Then, while trailing 1-4 with a game point on his serve, Gea ran to the side of the court and asked where the doctor was again. They convened by the umpire’s chair, and the 21-year-old made it clear that he needed to go to the toilet, even though he was in the middle of a game and a changeover wasn’t due yet.

One official confirmed Gea had been struggling with stomach problems, and the wildcard continued speaking to the doctor in French. Another member of the group was heard saying: “Yes, if it’s urgent, he can do that.”

Gea had a drink of water and returned to the baseline to finish the game. He won the next point to win the game, and immediately raced off the court while 2-4 down, even though it wasn’t a changeover.

The 21-year-old returned and went on to lose the first set 6-3. He made the second set tighter, but still lost it in a tiebreak, and Khachanov ran away with it to claim a 6-3 7-6(3) 6-0 victory.

Gea had been making his French Open main draw debut, but was unable to get a win on the board. He played his first-ever Grand Slam main draw at the Australian Open back in January, shocking No. 17 seed Jiri Lehecka before losing to former champion Stan Wawrinka in a five-set thriller.
