Ex-Champions League star dies after battle with motor neurone disease | Football | Sport

Former Greece international Paraskevas Antzas has died at the age of 49 following a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is the most prevalent form of motor neurone disease (MND), accounting for roughly 90% of all cases of the rare, progressive conditions that attack motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord.

The central defender was a regular figure in the Champions League during his time with Greek powerhouses Olympiacos and throughout his tenure in Piraeus, Antzas claimed seven Super League titles and three Greek Cups. Antzas also represented the senior national team on 26 occasions, a pair of which were during the European Championship in 2008, which came two decades after he appeared at the under-21s version, where Greece were runners-up to Spain.

A statement from his former club reads: “Olympiacos FC, with a sense of sorrow, bids farewell to a great man and footballer, Paraskevas Antzas, who honoured the red and white jersey with passion, strength and dignity. His presence left a strong impression on the field of play and on everyone who knew him. We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Let the soil that will cover it be light.”

Antzas launched his career with Pandramaikos before heading to Xanthi, where the defender was one of three players to share the Best Young Player of the Season accolade in 1998. A switch to Olympiacos followed that summer, heralding the most illustrious chapter of his footballing career.

He abruptly retired in 2003 for family reasons; however, the defender quickly had a change of heart and signed on the dotted line at hometown side Doxa Drama. Antzas was omitted from the Euro 2004 squad, despite appearing in qualifying, when Greece shocked the world by claiming the trophy.

He then embarked on a second stint at Olympiacos in 2007. Antzas brought the curtain down on his playing career for good two years later, and the player announced his retirement through a statement on their website.

Tributes have now poured in for the star across social media. One reads: “This one hurts. Perhaps one of the most underrated players in modern Greek football. An incredible centre-back. Rest in peace.”

A second says: “Sad news. RIP to Antzas. Thoughts and prayers with his family.”

Another added: “We’re living through unbelievable situations. I can’t believe it. From my idols at Olympiacos, and so young. Truly, truly, truly such a shame.”
