Who is Ederson? Man Utd’s first summer transfer appeals directly to Ratcliffe | Football | Sport

His rise to prominence across Europe is well documented, which makes Manchester United‘s ability to keep their interest in Ederson under wraps all the more impressive. United have pursued several other targets alongside the Brazilian, and have been perfectly comfortable allowing those names to enter the public domain. Yet it could well be Ederson who becomes the first new arrival through the doors of Old Trafford this summer.
United could be forgiven for wanting nothing more to do with Atalanta. After all, it was the very same Italian club that sold them Rasmus Hojlund for £72million, and we all know how that turned out. Yet they have remained undaunted, having spent 12 months keeping close tabs on Ederson’s progress and development in Serie A and the Champions League. Meanwhile, Atalanta president Antonio Percassi is eager to cash in on the midfielder, who will be entering the final 12 months of his current contract next month.
Ederson first appeared on United’s radar after playing a key role in helping Atalanta clinch the Europa League in 2024, making 52 appearances and netting seven goals throughout that campaign. United’s resolve has not faltered.
Beyond some glowing scouting reports on a player renowned for his tenacity, energy and eye for goal, Ederson ticked further boxes when it became apparent to United that he would fall comfortably within their financial constraints.
A price tag of £42m caught the attention of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. As did the fact that Ederson is currently earning just £25,000 a week in Italy, and would only require a rise to around £75,000 a week in Manchester.
While Michael Carrick’s appointment as permanent manager also accelerated proceedings, he took time to carefully weigh up the merits of a move for the 26-year-old.
Carrick is understood to admire Ederson’s versatility across midfield positions. Equally comfortable in a holding midfield role, or one further forward up the pitch.
Despite flourishing at Atalanta, Ederson has made no secret of his ambition to test himself at one of the world’s biggest clubs. His long-held dream has been to make his mark in the Premier League.
Speaking about his qualities, Ederson said: “My features are keeping the ball at my feet. I can play both defensive and attacking football. I find it easy to attack the space.”

Ederson’s favourite number is 13. Unlucky for some, perhaps, but seemingly not for him. He requested the No.13 shirt upon joining Atalanta from Salernitana in 2022. His wife was born on July 13, and his superstitious nature runs deep.
This means Ederson will need to hold a conversation with Patrick Dorgu upon his arrival at United. Dorgu currently occupies the No.13 shirt at Old Trafford.
Ederson has earned three Brazil caps, yet has not been selected for the World Cup squad. This means he will be available for a full pre-season at United, should the deal be concluded.
And if he can maintain his upward trajectory at one of the most celebrated clubs in the world, an international recall will surely follow.
But standing out for Atalanta is one thing — doing it at Old Trafford is an entirely different proposition. Talented signings have arrived and departed Old Trafford before, failing to leave any lasting impression.
The pressure on him to deliver will therefore be immense, if United are to avoid once again appearing inept in the transfer market.
