Champions League final viewers complain ‘game has gone’ after Arsenal vs PSG scenes | Football | Sport
Fans bemoaned the scenes ahead of the Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest, with many claiming the ‘game has gone’. The champions of England met the champions of France in European football’s biggest fixture, with what was the first-ever Champions League final kicking off at 6pm local time.
However, it was the pre-match build-up that angered fans, with rock band The Killers performing in the opening ceremony. A gigantic stage was erected in the middle of the pitch, with the band playing some of their biggest hits in the build-up to the final.
Complaining on X, @CwoPod1888 said: “USA Superbowl style pre-match shows at the CL final. The games gone!”
@drtq_9 added: “That pre match show was a disgrace.”
@Hyndoooo wrote: “Pre match show at the Champions League final is nothing short of utter woke nonesense.”
@RodsThfc hypothised: “The Lip Sync is so off on this pre-match show. So obvious he ain’t singing.”
@CarlyFletch replied: “This pre-match show stuff, really isn’t needed,” with a yawning emoji.
@NinetayFour bemoaned: “It’s a football match, not a concert. Looks so cringe with the fans in the crowd not even caring about this pre match show.”
But not everyone was against the idea, with @JBaldock94 writing: “Might be nonsense having music involved in football but I do love The Killers. It was nearly 10 years ago but one of the best concerts i have been to.”
@ReeceLSport joked: “Not to be too woke but thoroughly enjoyed that Killers Pre Match Show.”
@Mjas09 rejoiced: “The greatest pre match show I think I’ve ever seen from @thekillers – wow! Let’s have it!”
On the pitch, it didn’t appear to impact Arsenal‘s build-up, with the Gunners racing out of the blocks to take a 1-0 lead. A rebounded clearance found its way to Kai Havertz, who had to run half the length of the pitch before roofing a strike into the top of PSG’s goal.
The French side failed to settle into the match, but they had reason to be outraged when the referee waved away a penalty shout on Bukayo Saka midway through the first half. After the ball was only half cleared from a PSG corner, the Englishman mistimed his clearance, with it looking as if the ball hit his hand not once, but twice.
