Tennis LIVE: French Open embarrassed as John McEnroe fumes at punishment | Tennis | Sport

John McEnroe has rushed to the defence of Daniel Vallejo after the ATP Tour player was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Vallejo heavily criticised the umpire after his second-round defeat against Moise Kouame.

He appeared to insinuate she’d have done a better job at controlling a passionate home crowd if she was a man.

It sparked immense backlash and Vallejo ended up with a whopping £56,000 fine – around half of his prize money for reaching the second round.

McEnroe wasn’t impressed by the decision, saying: “This guy, he doesn’t make the type of money. For this guy to walk out, he’s obviously stupid, but that is a big-time fine.

“It’s his second language. He’s not a natural English speaker. He speaks Spanish. You’ve got to cut the guy a little slack.

“He is obviously not married first of all! But here is the thing: $65,000 to say something asinine. That seems absurd! I can see $5,000, maybe $10,000. But this guy doesn’t make the type of money which Naomi Osaka does.”
