If you’ve ever dreamed of swapping your daily routine for sunshine, sea views and dozens of adorable cats, this might be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
A cat sanctuary on a stunning Greek island is looking for animal lovers willing to lend a helping hand – and in return, volunteers can live there rent-free.
The opportunity is available through Syros Cats, an animal welfare organisation based on the picturesque island of Syros.
Home to more than 60 rescue cats, the sanctuary is searching for volunteers aged 25 and over to help care for its furry residents.
The role involves feeding, cleaning and spending time with the cats, many of whom have been rescued from difficult situations and need plenty of love and attention.
Sharing the opportunity on TikTok, user @travelpriates said: “You can live for free in Greece while volunteering at a cat sanctuary, and honestly, I think it might be the best job in the world.
“The incredible team there are looking for a couple extra pairs of hands to help out with feeding, cleaning and loving the cats.”
Applications for 2026 are already open, with interest expected to be high among cat lovers around the world.
According to the sanctuary, volunteers are expected to commit to at least one month and work around five hours a day, five days a week.
In return, accommodation, breakfast and utility bills are covered, allowing successful applicants to experience island life without worrying about rent.
However, there is one important detail applicants should be aware of. The organisation charges a small application fee when applying for volunteer placements.
The sanctuary particularly welcomes people with veterinary assistant training or experience working with feral cats, although anyone with a genuine love of animals is encouraged to apply.
Applicants must also be reliable, independent and willing to get their hands dirty.
While the cats are undoubtedly the main attraction, the location itself is equally tempting.
Unlike some of Greece’s busier tourist hotspots, Syros is known for its relaxed atmosphere and authentic charm.
The island’s capital, Ermoupoli, is famous for its elegant architecture, marble streets and beautiful waterfront.
Often described as one of the Cyclades’ hidden gems, Syros attracts visitors looking for a quieter Greek island experience away from the party crowds of places like Mykonos.
