Man Utd plot surprise Leeds transfer swoop ahead of Carrick decision | Football | Sport
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow this summer as they hunt for a seasoned deputy between the sticks. The 35-year-old is set to become a free agent when his contract at Elland Road expires later this month.
According to The Athletic, Leeds are keen to retain Darlow’s services and are expected to table a fresh contract offer. United are also said to have held talks over a potential move for Wolves stopper Sam Johnstone, who came through the academy ranks at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old departed United back in 2018 and has since built an impressive career, despite never making a senior appearance for the first team. This comes as an intriguing development, given that United have just handed veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton a one-year contract extension.
The 40-year-old had been widely expected to depart Old Trafford this summer, yet has committed to a further season at the club. Heaton first joined United in 2021 and has managed just three first-team appearances during that period.
Despite his limited playing time, he is regarded as an invaluable squad member who plays a crucial role in maintaining standards behind the scenes. One player who will certainly be departing United this summer is Casemiro, whose contract at Old Trafford is also due to expire.
The Brazilian has previously stressed the pivotal part Heaton plays within the dressing room, and why his input is so invaluable.
“He [Heaton] is very important. Very important for us,” Casemiro said on Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.
“He pushes the training, he pushes in the game, of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy; he helps the room so much.”
United are anticipated to overhaul their goalkeeping setup, with Altay Bayindir widely expected to depart, while questions remain over Andre Onana’s long-term future at the club.
The latter spent last season on loan in Turkiye and United are keen to raise funds from his sale, though reports suggest he is determined to remain and battle Senne Lammens for the number one jersey.
