Tennis LIVE: Emma Raducanu clears up fears as Brit returns for third match in 24 hours | Tennis | Sport
Emma Raducanu will contest her third career final, and her first on home soil, at the Queen’s Club today. Almost five years after she shocked the world by lifting the 2021 US Open trophy as a teenage qualifier, the British No. 1 is one win away from being crowned the Queen’s champion.
To do it, she will have to play a third match in the space of 24 hours. Raducanu was on double duty on Saturday, as she took to the court for her postponed quarter-final clash with Kamilla Rakhimova at 12.30pm, and did not finish until around 2.30pm. She was back out on the Andy Murray Arena at 5.15pm, and stunned sixth seed Iva Jovic around 7pm. Now, she meets lucky loser Donna Vekic at 1.30pm on Sunday in the championship match.
Raducanu sparked concerns in her quarter-final when she slipped on the court during the second set and left the court for a medical timeout. She returned with heavy strapping on her left thigh, but removed it at the next changeover. However, when she faced Jovic in the semis, the 23-year-old had a new, smaller bandage in the same place.
But the world No. 42 is going to do everything she possibly can to be raring to go for the final. She takes on Vekic, who lost in the final round of qualifying exactly a week ago, but got into the main draw after Marta Kostyuk pulled out. Now ranked down at No. 76, Vekic is a former top-20 player and loves this grass. This is her first tour-level final since the Olympics two years ago, where she claimed the silver medal.
