World Cup’s ‘worst pundit’ named as ITV receive complaints from fans | Football | Sport
This summer’s supersized World Cup is well and truly underway, with teams from across the globe having descended on North America for the football extravaganza. It’s the first time in World Cup history that 48 different nations are competing, with England hoping now is the time that 60 years of hurt comes to an end.
To do that, they will first of all have to come through a group including Ghana, Panama and 2022 semi-finalists, Croatia. The knockouts begin at the round-of-32 stage, with a potential round-of-16 clash against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. Who said it would be easy?
The BBC and ITV will share the England matches this summer, but for those tuning into the latter, there may be a touch of disappointment. That’s because Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon have been blasted for their commentary at this year’s World Cup, with fans having been left fuming.
Fans flooded to X to express their disappointment, with @eggbassett1 saying: “Matterface and Dixon are the worst commentary team of all time.”
@Binnsphilip remarked: “How on earth do ITV think Matterface & Dixon are their best commentator combo when they are consummately the worst of all broadcasters!?”
But it appears Dixon was the one fans were most upset about, with @DanSpencer29 writing: “Omg…. Lee Dixon must be the worst person I’ve ever heard on commentary [shocked emoji] Just show a bit of energy and humour mate!!”
@kimber74073 said: “Lee Dixon. Worst pundit on TV. How has he got a job in TV?”
@andystevens007 chimed in with: “Is Lee Dixon the worst co-commentator ever?”
While @bcotts9 added: “Best part of this World Cup so far is everyone realising how crap and useless Lee Dixon is as a commentator, bloke is comfortably the worst out there.”
Matterface and Dixon have been the lead commentary duo on ITV since Euro 2020, when England were beaten in the final by Italy. Dixon had previously been a pundit for the BBC, and also works for American broadcaster NBC, which airs Premier League matches in the States.
England’s first World Cup game against Croatia will be aired on ITV, along with their final match of the group stage against Panama. The BBC will have the match against Ghana, and most likely the first knockout game, should England make it that far.
