Man Utd plot £130m double transfer as Mateus Fernandes set for reunion | Football | Sport
At least one additional central midfielder is anticipated to arrive alongside the Brazilian, with Fernandes identified as a primary target. Discussions with Fernandes’ representative over a potential £80million transfer have already commenced and the West Ham midfielder is widely expected to depart the London Stadium following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.
The 21-year-old is understood to be enthusiastic about the prospect and, as it happens, may not be the only player swapping east London for Manchester this summer, with United also pursuing Crysensio Summerville.
The Athletic claim that United are amongst several clubs monitoring £50m-rated Summerville, who has already impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup. Along with Fernandes, the 24-year-old, who struck a stunning goal for the Dutch in their 2-2 draw with Japan, represents one of West Ham’s most valuable assets following relegation and could be on the move.
Summerville’s adaptability has made him an appealing proposition for United should they pursue a winger this summer, though bolstering their midfield ranks will remain the club’s foremost concern.
United enjoyed a fruitful transfer window last summer after pursuing established Premier League attackers in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both of whom brought a fresh dynamic to their frontline.
While Summerville would need no time to settle into Premier League football, he would likely command a fee of around £50m given he still has three years left to run on his West Ham contract.
The fate of Marcus Rashford will play a crucial role in determining whether United push ahead with a move for Summerville or another wide player this transfer window.
The 28-year-old headed to Barcelona on loan last summer with an option to make the arrangement permanent, something that was previously regarded as a foregone conclusion.
However, Barcelona have since splashed out £70m on Anthony Gordon, leaving Rashford’s future shrouded in uncertainty. He still has two years remaining on his contract and, should he return to Old Trafford, United would in all likelihood not pursue another wide attacker.
