Ferrari were clearly expecting the race to resume before the final lap, but the safety car remained on track until the very end. It saw Hamilton come home in third, but it quickly became apparent that he was being investigated for a potential yellow flag infringement. He was ordered to visit the stewards after the podium celebrations but was spared a costly penalty.

Hamilton was only given a reprimand, meaning he gets to keep his third-placed finish and his tally of 15 points earned at Silverstone.

Earlier in the race, the 41-year-old was handed a five-second penalty for a false start, which he served at his first pit stop.

Speaking after the chequered flag, he admitted that he was expecting to be penalised for the alleged yellow flag infringement.

“All the magic I had on Friday just disappeared through the weekend,” Hamilton told Sky Sports.

“I’m probably going to get a penalty. The FIA often have to react. I went through a yellow flag and didn’t see it. So a jump start, yellow flag [infringement]. When it rains it pours.

“I’ve just been to see them, so I don’t have an answer, but I will probably get a penalty I’m sure. I was just lacking front end. We massively under-egged it on the front wing. That’s my fault and the engineer’s fault.”

A message initially flashed up saying that it would be peeling off the circuit, allowing for one final lap of racing, but it ultimately stayed out.

The FIA later explained why this happened, saying in a statement: “The safety car period regulation, Article B5. 13.5, states that one lap must be completed following the unlapping procedure.

“This process was followed by race pperations. The ‘safety car in this lap’ message was displayed erroneously due to a software error.”
