Mexico vs England kick-off delayed as FIFA issue statement on World Cup chaos | Football | Sport
England‘s game against Mexico has been delayed because of a lightning storm in Mexico City. The match at the Azteca Stadium was originally scheduled to begin at 6pm local time (1am UK time), but it will now start an hour later than billed. Earlier this week, it was revealed that storms had been forecast around kick-off time, raising the possibility of delays or suspensions.
Under FIFA rules, play must be suspended or delayed if there is lightning within eight miles of the stadium. The game is only allowed to resume when 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike. A number of matches at this World Cup have already faced similar delays because of lightning and stormy weather.
The match between England and Mexico is now expected to get underway an hour later than planned, at 7pm local time (2am UK time).
In a statement, FIFA said: “Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including risk caused by lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the kick-off of the World Cup 2026 round of 16 match between Mexico and England has been delayed to 19.00 local time.
“The safety and security of all individuals is FIFA’s priority. We thank all fans for their understanding and cooperation.”
It comes after a shelter-in-place warning was issued in the area of the Azteca Stadium around three hours before kick-off. The advice given to supporters and media inside the ground was to remain in their seats.
News of potential stormy weather had fuelled speculation on Friday night that the game would be moved forward by six hours. However, it was eventually confirmed that FIFA never actually decided to reschedule the match, contrary to widespread reports.
There could be further delays if the lightning returns once the game at the Azteca Stadium is underway. If that happens, the 30-minute rule will come into effect.
When that window has passed without further lightning strikes, the players will be allowed to warm up for a brief period before the match resumes.
England will face Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals if they beat Mexico, with a brace from Erling Haaland securing a shock win over Brazil earlier on Sunday night.
