Jordan Henderson health update as England win marred by freak injury | Football | Sport

Footage on social media confirmed the Brentford midfielder, who was an unused substitute in Mexico City, fell hard on the floor when he hopped over the advertising hoardings to return to the pitch. Team-mate Dan Burn was among those to rush to his aid. Tuchel told the BBC post-match after his player’s awkward landing: “Not good. Not good. I mean it’s the next thing. Right defender now with a red card and Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. Looks really bad.”

Tuchel confirmed in his press conference that Henderson has been taken to hospital for scans to discover the extent of the issue and to see if he requires surgery. The German said: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital it’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”

Speaking to the BBC immediately after his team-mate’s accident, captain Harry Kane said with a broken voice: “Yeah Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s OK. Something to do with his arm.”

Before BBC host Kelly Cates explained: “Kane says he’s absolutely fine but he did fall over the advertising hoardings. That’s what we think happened. He looked like he was getting some oxygen as he was stretchered off the pitch. We wish Jordan Henderson well.”

Jude Bellingham added on his friend: “He’s in a bit of bother. But our medical team have got everything under control. I’m best not to give too much detail, I don’t know everything that’s going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was beautiful to see.”

Any serious injury to Henderson’s wrist or arm would be a bitter blow to Thomas Tuchel’s team. They have already been dealing with injuries to Reece James and Jarell Quansah with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka also nursing issues.

Quansah will be unavailable for England’s quarter-final against Norway next weekend after his red card. The FA appear unlikely to appeal given the nature of the defender’s tackle, which saw him dismissed after a VAR review.

If James is not fit to face Erling Haaland‘s side, Ezri Konsa is likely to deputise at right-back. Henderson cannot be replaced due to FIFA rules which will leave England a man light in their midfield depth if he cannot play again in North America.

Outfield players can only be replaced in 26-man World Cup squads if the injury occurs before the first match has been played.

Kobbie Mainoo has yet to play a single minute at the tournament but could now become the first-choice back-up to Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson in the centre of the park.

England return to action next Saturday (July 11) against Norway, which will be a 10pm kick-off for fans in the UK. The Three Lions are just two victories away from the World Cup final which takes place in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19 at 8pm.
