Jordan Henderson was rushed to hospital as England manager admitted the injury looked “really bad”. Henderson was stretchered off the pitch in Mexico City Stadium after falling over the advertising hoardings after him and his teammates were celebrating their 3-2 last-16 World Cup victory over Mexico. In an update update to the BBC, Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel said the injury was “really bad” and that it might require surgery. He said: “Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over an injured his wrist, it looks really bad.

“It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.” In his post-match press conference, Tuchel also said: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital. It’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”

After his fall, medical staff quickly rushed to his aid before he was placed on a stretcher and given oxygen.

Captain Harry Kane initially offered an optimistic assessment, suggesting the injury may not have been too severe.

He told the BBC: “Jordan just fell over there, I think he’s okay, just something to do with his arm.”

But Jude Bellingham then raised fears by saying: “He’s in a bit bother but our medical team have it under control.

“Best to not give too much detail when I don’t know too much what’s going on, but everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”

England booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals despite being reduced to 10 men. Bellingham fired England into a commanding lead with two first-half goals before Mexico hit back through Julián Quiñones.

England’s task became even tougher after Jarell Quansah was shown a red card early in the second half, but Kane restored the two-goal cushion from the penalty spot.

Raúl Jiménez converted a late penalty to set up a tense finish, yet Tuchel’s side held firm to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory and set up a quarter-final clash with Norway. The match will take place on Satuday evening. Reflecting on the performance, Bellingham praised England’s resilience under pressure.

After the match Bellingham said “Hard to put it all together, really.

“With ten men, defending like we did around our box, and being clinical when we got into theirs in big pressure moments.

“Maybe in years gone by, and I know especially me watching as a fan when I was a kid, England would have crumbled. But this team stuck together right until the last second.

“The players who came on, the players who started, all of them running themselves into the ground, putting their bodies on the line. That’s what this team is about.”
