England are into the World Cup quarter-finals after securing one of their greatest ever wins on foreign soil with 10 men. The Three Lions became just the third team in 60 years to beat Mexico in a competitive match at the Azteca Stadium as a 3-2 victory dumped the co-hosts out in Mexico City. After kick-off was delayed by an hour due to adverse weather, Jude Bellingham silenced the Azteca with a 37th-minute opener and then scored another just 99 seconds later.

Julian Quinones scored his fourth goal of the World Cup four minutes after Bellingham’s second to revive the hopes of the home crowd. And Jarell Quansah’s red card nine minutes into the second half then sparked more Mexican celebrations. But soon after, Harry Kane made it 3-1 from the penalty spot. Kane gave away a penalty that allowed Raul Jimenez to reduce the deficit with another 20 minutes still to go. Yet the 10 men of England defended superbly to survive the onslaught and seal their spot in the quarter-finals where they face Norway.

England player ratings vs Mexico

Superb. A brilliant low save to deny Raul Jimenez to his left and followed it up with another leaping stop to tip the striker’s header over the bar. A great gather and throw to start the move for England’s opening goal. Dived the right way but couldn’t save Jimenez’s penalty and was authoritative late on as Mexico threatened an equaliser to claim crosses and punch clear others.

Up against Mexico danger man Julian Quinones but was too easily held off by the winger for a Jimenez chance in first-half stoppage time. Was sent off in the 54th minute for a clear red card offence. Caught Jesus Gallardo high up the Mexican’s shin with his studs.

His clearance fell kindly for Quinones’ goal but he was unlucky. Moved to right-back when England went down to 10 men and put in a good shift.

Marshalled Jimenez well for one threatening first-half chance and helped his team hold strong under a barrage of Mexican pressure at the end.

Continues to look comfortable at this level despite this being just his 10th cap. Played a perfect cross through the box early into the second half but none of his team-mates were alert enough to attack it. Had a 20-yard volley deflected against the post only seconds later. Subbed off shortly after being carded when accused of elbowing Jorge Sanchez.

Booked inside a minute for a high foot but coped extremely well on a yellow card. Helped make the first England goal with a lengthy burst forward before passing to Saka and as heroic as ever off the ball too despite his booking.

Won the ball to start the move for the second goal with tenacious pressing. Crucial headed clearance in one Mexico attack and it was a surprise when he was brought off in the 75th minute given his energy.

Great work to get to the byline and clip a perfect cross into Bellingham for the opener. Very unlucky to concede a soft free-kick that led to the Quinones goal and unfortunate again to be the man who had to make way after Quansah’s dismissal. Still not at 100 per cent though.

The man of the hour again as he scored twice in quick succession to take his World Cup tally to four goals. Brilliant movement for both, as well. And some sensational recovery defending at the other end to stop Cesar Montes making it 2-2 from close range – and that was all before half-time! One glorious run second half showed just how good he is at dribbling and he was key defensively with 10 men. Some player.

Looked sharp and eager to get at Sanchez. Tested Raul Rangel with England’s first shot on target and played a role in the second goal with the pass to Bellingham. Lightning-quick reactions to beat Rangel to the ball to win England’s penalty.

A good run to open space for Bellingham to make it 1-0 then caught the Mexico defence by surprise when he supplied a selfless cross for the second goal. Battled well to help the ball fall to Gordon to win the penalty then dispatched the spot-kick superbly. Gave away a penalty at the other end when he fouled Brian Gutierrez. It was a foul but in Kane’s defence it was an honest challenge so doesn’t affect his rating. Booked.

Came on for his World Cup debut to help repel Mexico’s bombardment and did his job. A fantastic late block inside the box.

Djed Spence (Anderson 73′) – 7
