Woman who thought she was meeting potential husband gang raped in wood | World | News
Three men have been jailed for life after a woman was lured to a forest under the pretence of meeting a potential husband before being gang raped. A court in Tangail, Bangladesh, sentenced the men on Tuesday over the attack, which took place in Madhupur upazila in 2023.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Md Omrao Khan Dipu, the victim was taken from Jamalpur to the Dokhola forest area in Madhupur on June 22, 2023. Abdur Rahim, 45, Shafiqul Islam Shafi, 47, and Shamsul Haque, 35, told the victim that she was being introduced to a prospective groom. Instead, prosecutors said, she was taken to the forest and gang raped in a vicious attack.
The woman, who has not been named, filed a report at Madhupur Police Station following the attack.
After the investigation and trial, the tribunal found the three men guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
The verdict brings to an end a case that began more than three years ago, after the woman reported being deceived into travelling to the forest area.
The court heard that the promise of a possible marriage meeting had been used to lure her from Jamalpur before the assault took place.
The case was heard by the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, which deals with offences involving violence against women and children.
The three convicted men will now serve life sentences for their involvement in the attack.
