Clare Balding shot down for Arthur Fery comments moments after Wimbledon win | Tennis | Sport
Clare Balding was quickly shot down by Jamie Murray after jokingly suggesting that Arthur Fery should head straight to the pub following his stunning win over Flavio Cobolli. The British breakthrough star, playing on Centre Court for just the second time, looked like the coolest man in the house as he wrapped up a 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 victory against the No. 9 seed.
Fery, 23, was handed a wildcard to compete at the All England Club and he has now banked £900,000 by progressing to the semi-finals, where he will meet Alexander Zverev. Only one wildcard has ever won the Wimbledon title – Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.
Speaking on the BBC‘s coverage after the match, Balding said: “Enjoy it, but don’t get carried away. You can say no to some requests.” Murray chirped in with: “I think get carried away. It’s incredible, what a run he is on. Revel in it.”
And Balding added: “Go to the pub!” But that was too far for the two-time doubles Grand Slam champion as he responded: “Maybe not.”
Todd Woodbridge, who was sat alongside Tim Henman, commented: “He’s not Nick Kyrgios. He’s not going to do that.”
Murray: “He’s been on an incredible run, we hope it keeps going. It’s going to be a big step up in playing Zverev next.
“He’s one of the biggest servers in the game. Get out there and love it, the experience and keep doing your thing, You’re going to have the whole crowd behind you.”
Fery looked like calmness personified throughout the entirety of his straight-sets win. “Definitely not on the inside!” he said after the tie.
“I felt emotions that I’ve never experienced before in my life in that last game, and I’m sure it is the same up there [in my coaching box]. It is unbelievable to share this with those guys, they are a great bunch so I’m so happy.”
He added: “I don’t know what I’ll do over the next couple of days, I’ve never been in this position before! I guess it will be the first time and we will figure it all out as we go.
“I’m just going to keep going, I’ve been doing a great job for the past 10 days, so I’m just going to do the same thing and see where that takes me.”
