Everything you need to know about potential delays to England vs Norway at the World Cup…
- England to take on Norway – The Three Lions are set to play against Norway in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Saturday evening at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Kick-off is scheduled for 10pm (BST).
- Potential disruption – Extreme weather conditions have been forecast as the match is underway, meaning that the clash could be delayed or interrupted as it is underway.
- High temperatures and uncomfortable conditions – The US National Weather Service has issued an urgent heat advisory, claiming that temperatures could feel as hot at 43C. Saharan dust has also made conditions more uncomfortable for players and supporters in the locality.
- Thunderstorm risk – Thunderstorms have also been forecast in Miami at the weekend. Under FIFA rules, any lightning within an eight-mile radius of the stadium will trigger an automatic suspension of play. If the protocol is activated, players will not be able to return to the field of play until at least 30 minutes after the last detected lightning strike.
- World Cup repeat risk – Should lightning strike in the region, it wouldn’t be the first time that a match has been postponed at the 2026 World Cup. England’s last 16 win over Mexico was postponed by over an hour due to torrid conditions, while France’s group stage game with Iraq was halted at half-time for two hours due to torrential downpours.
- Advisory from officials – The National Weather Service has warned the combination of high temperatures and humidity on Friday, meanwhile, could lead to heat-related illnesses. Officials are urging people to stay hydrated and seek air-conditioned spaces where possible.
- Actions to take – A statement from the USNWS reads: “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
