Tesco to make major change to deliveries on Saturday | Personal Finance | Finance
Tesco customers will be able to skip delivery fees this weekend as the supermarket giant launches a one-day promotion for its on-demand “Whoosh” service. Ahead of a major weekend of football, Tesco announced it will offer free Whoosh deliveries on Saturday, July 11, for shoppers looking to stock up on last-minute essentials.
The Whoosh service, which typically dispatches orders from local stores to customers’ doors in under an hour, will waive its standard delivery charges for shoppers who hit a minimum basket value of £25.
The discount will be automatically applied at checkout during the one-day window.
The timing of the promotion coincides with a busy weekend of sports, with England set to compete against Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals. The Three Lions progressed following a nail-biting 3-2 victory against Mexico in the round of 16 last Sunday.
The match, set to take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, is scheduled to kick off at 10pm BST (5pm local time).
Tesco’s flash promotion reflects a broader trend among major retailers leveraging the World Cup to drive sales.
Football fan favourites have seen their highest promotional activity in June in the past five years, according to Worldpanel by Numerator. Deals have been most prevalent on beer, cider, snacks, crisps and chilled pizza, as retailers compete for customers stocking up ahead of matches.
Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said: “Nearly a third of all grocery spending is now on promotion, and that upward streak shows no sign of breaking.
“Combined with strong online growth, it points to shoppers who know what they want and are increasingly confident about where and how to find the best deal. In short, retailers are having to compete hard for that summer shop.”
