John McEnroe causes a stir with ‘rockstar’ outfit for Wimbledon final | Tennis | Sport

John McEnroe’s choice of outfit for the Wimbledon men’s final sent BBC viewers into a frenzy, sporting a ‘rockstar’ like get-up while his peers suited up for the occasion. The 67-year-old was courtside for the broadcaster, providing punditry for Sunday’s gripping encounter between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

Stood on Centre Court ahead of the 4pm clash alongside Clare Balding and Pat Cash, McEnroe appeared to stand out like a sore thumb with his choice of attire – sporting a buttoned down black shirt, black pants and a necklace on full display across his bare chest. Balding, meanwhile, opted for a long orange dress jacket, while Cash had on a black blazer and white shirt. And McEnroe was the first to admit that he had picked the wrong clothes for the final, as his all-black number soaked up the heat in the 28 °C conditions in SW19.

Balding said: “The wind is slightly less gusty down here. I’m alongside two men who know exactly what it takes to step out here and win the title, John McEnroe and Pat Cash.”

McEnroe then replied, with a hint of sarcasm: “I’m so glad I wore black. It’s hot out here. That’s going to be an issue with Sinner, right? So we’ll see what happens, especially early on if it’s in his head at all.”

Cash, meanwhile, added: “Today, I don’t think it’s going to be an issue. First of all, we’ve got a bit of a breeze here. And it’s not really stinking hot like in Australia or New York. My goodness, I’d drop dead there.”

Elsewhere, fans on social media took issue with McEnroe’s clothes for the Grand Slam final, with some jesting that he had dressed like a ‘rockstar.’ One wrote on X: “I’m loving the fact John McEnroe is dressed like a 70s Mick Jagger whilst the other announcers are wearing basic suits & ties – he also just casually dropped ‘goddamnit’ into a sentence.”

Another asked: “@Wimbledon what kind of outfit is John McEnroe wearing, for God’s sake?” while a third queried: “Why is John McEnroe dressed like a 70s rock star on Championship Sunday at #Wimbledon.”

A fourth added: “Is there a reason John McEnroe looks like he left the club at 7am & walked straight onto the set,” while a fifth joked: “Someone tell John McEnroe to button up a bit please.”

It comes as Sinner and Zverev embark in a showdown for all the marbles at 4pm on Sunday. ATP No. 1 Sinner is vying for a fifth total Grand Slam in his remarkable career to date, having reigned supreme on the courts of SW19 last summer.

He also has a pair of Australian Opens and a US Open from 2024 to his name. Zverev, meanwhile, is looking for a second major title as he heads into the outing.
