Alexander Zverev’s girlfriend no-shows Wimbledon final after booking flight | Tennis | Sport
Alexander Zverev’s long-term girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla, couldn’t be present to support him in the Wimbledon final, despite booking a flight to England. Zverev took on reigning champion Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final on centre-court.
The German was hoping to end a losing streak against his rival, which had seen the Italian win each of the last nine meetings. He was also aiming to win his second Grand Slam in just over a month after lifting the French Open title.
But, despite Zverev taking the first set on a tie-breaker, Sinner was able to turn the match around. The 24-year-old eventually coming out as 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner to retain his title, and extend his winning run over Zverev to 10 games.
The eyes of the tennis world were on the match, but Thomalla couldn’t be at Wimbledon to support her partner. Sport Bild reports that her absence was due to her having to work, the same reason she couldn’t be at the French Open final.
The report adds that she ‘tried everything’ to get to London in time, including booking a flight. However, that didn’t take off until after 8pm, with the final ending just before then.
“But no, congratulations to Jannik. He showed once again why he’s the best player in the world. It was great to share the Centre Court with you on finals weekend.
“It’s a great honour. Unfortunately, it didn’t go my way but congratulations to you first of all.”
Zverev’s attention now turns to the hard court season and the US Open next month. Bild reports that the 29-year-old will return to Monte Carlo and have a few days off before heading to North America.
The French Open champion is set to play in both Montreal and Cincinnati in the build-up to the Grand Slam. It’s reported that Thomalla will be in attendance for those tournaments.
