Man Utd transfer plan changes again as Ederson ‘receives new offer’ after failed medical | Football | Sport
Manchester United have reportedly made a decision on whether or not to revive their failed pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson. He looked set to become their first summer signing after a deal worth around £39million was agreed with Atalanta at the start of the window. Ederson completed some initial medical tests before travelling to the World Cup and it looked like it was only a matter of time before the move would be confirmed.
However, after Brazil’s surprise exit at the hands of Norway, he underwent another round of medical checks. It was at this point that United decided to pivot on the deal, instead favouring moves for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. It was initially claimed by The Athletic that a potential move for Ederson could be resurrected later in the window, but that no longer appears to be the case.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the move is not expected to be revived at any point before the end of the summer. The report states that discussions have ‘completely collapsed’, with United now focused on other targets.
It’s also claimed that Atalanta have offered Ederson a new and improved contract, further reducing the likelihood of a move elsewhere.
United have been trying to improve their midfield ranks since the end of last season, with Casemiro leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract.
Manuel Ugarte was initially listed for transfer but has since sustained a long-term knee injury that will prevent him from being sold this summer.
Ederson is not the only midfielder United have failed to land, with the Red Devils also falling short in their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes.
He ended up joining Tottenham in a deal worth around £85m. United offered the same figure in talks with West Ham but it reportedly included bonuses, rather than being a fixed fee, and the player chose to join Spurs instead.
Earlier this week, they confirmed the arrival of Santos, with the 22-year-old agreeing a five-year contract to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2031.
United are expected to follow up that deal with the signing of Tielemans after triggering his £35million release clause at Aston Villa. He is reportedly set to undergo a medical on Tuesday before completing the formalities of the switch.
