A teenage girl was allegedly gang raped while walking home from her local mosque. Police have launched an investigation following the reported attack and are working to track down three suspects.
The girl, 17, was walking home from an Arabic class at the mosque on Tuesday night (July 21). She was then reportedly approached by a man who forced her into a nearby orchard where two other attackers were waiting. They then allegedly gang raped the victim before fleeing the scene. The attack has been reported to the police, and an urgent investigation has been launched.
As reported by The Business Standard, the attack took place in the city of Rajshahi, in Bangladesh, at around 8pm local time (3pm UK time). Local police have named the suspects as Limon Islam, Shitu Alam, and Shiba Rahman.
The 17-year-old girl was walking home from the mosque when a man, who she reportedly knew, approached her and forced her into a nearby mango orchard. It’s alleged that the two other attackers were lying in wait before they raped her and fled.
The victim then went home and reported the attack to her family. They informed police before the girl was taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown.
Abdul Malek, the officer in charge of the case at Charghat Model Police Station, named the three suspects on Wednesday (July 22) in a bid to track them down. He said they all live locally, and officers are now conducting raids to arrest them.
Meanwhile, local people confirmed that the girl knew the man who lured her into the orchard. It is unclear whether she knew the other two suspects in the attack.
The girl was raped in the Charghat Upazila of Rajshahi, located in northwestern Bangladesh near the border with India. The area spans a total of 164 sq km and has a population of around 225,000 people.
