Danube crash: At least 14 injured in horror cruise crash in Vienna | World | News

At least 14 cruise passengers were injured after a crash into a quay wall near a power plant in Vienna. The luxury boat collided with a wall near the Freudenau power plant lock along the Danube in Austria at 4am on Friday.

Firefighters rushed to the scene along the riverbank and the waterway itself, checking for passengers and damage below the waterline. Emergency personnel also boarded the ship to rescue the injured, using a turntable ladder to bring five people ashore and a fireboat to transport two others.

A paramedic from Germany on board the ship helped provide first aid to injured passengers before the rescue team arrived with a special operations unit.

Rescue service spokesman Daniel Melcher confirmed 14 people were injured, six of whom were hospitalised with bruises.

Witnesses told Heute they saw multiple emergency vehicles from the Vienna Fire Department, the police, and the ambulance service parked around the lock.

Images shared with the outlet show significant damage to the bow of the yacht, with the front massively dented.

Those who escaped uninjured were taken to another ship to continue their journey down the river.

It’s currently not known what caused the collision, and an investigation is under way.
