There was a lengthy halt to proceedings as he instantly received medical attention in disturbing scenes in Glasgow. He was then taken away from the Emirates Arena on a stretcher, with his head and neck in a brace, and taken to hospital for multiple scans. Thankfully, Langton was cleared off any serious injury and was discharged from hospital on Saturday, July 20. The rest of his team-mates, Luke Whitehouse, Alex Yolshin-Cash, Adam Tobin and Joshua Nathan earned a silver medal in the team event, while the Canadian team of Jordan Carroll, Rene Cournoyer, Felix Dolci, William Emard and Ethan Ikeda took gold.

The silver medallists reunited with Langton at the team hotel in Glasgow. When he arrived, the whole team came out to applaud him and welcome him back.

They even created their own ceremony, placing his silver medal around his neck after he was unable to stand on the podium with his team-mates. Langton was a late inclusion in the team, as he arrived as a replacement for English gymnastics icon Max Whitlock.

His debut Commonwealth Games was terrifyingly close to disaster. There was relief in Glasgow when he was able to respond to medical staff moving his legs and hands. A statement was soon issued by Team England, confirming he had escaped serious injury.

It read: “Gabriel was transferred to the hospital as a precautionary measure overnight and underwent multiple scans today, with very positive results. Thankfully, he has been cleared of any serious injury complications and will be discharged to return to the team hotel this evening.

“He is in good spirits and hugely grateful for the many messages of support and the excellent care provided by the medical teams. He is looking forward to being reunited with the team to celebrate his silver medal.”

Whitehouse was the first member of Team England to step up for his event after Langton came so close to breaking his neck. After his event, the 24-year-old said: “It was really tough. We just had to reset, try to put it to one side mentally and focus on the job we had to do. I think everyone should be proud of the way we carried on after Gabe’s fall.

“We all agreed we’d take another warm-up and bring our energy back into it. There was a delay after the first warm-up, but we regrouped. The coaches were fantastic, and the boys who had to go up on high bar were incredible.

“The togetherness of the team really showed, and I couldn’t be prouder of everyone. We got in a huddle and knew we had a job to do for him. Perhaps silver is not the medal we wanted, but I’m still very proud of this team.”
