Things were less rosy on the other side of the Mercedes garage, with George Russell suffering an early blow. His car went into anti-stall mode as he attempted to launch off the line, leaving him swamped by the majority of the field heading into Turn One. He recovered well to claim a seventh-placed finish, but it was far from the result the 28-year-old would have wanted.

Antonelli didn’t have everything his own way, either. While he was trying to catch Verstappen towards the end of the race, facing pressure from Hamilton behind, the blue light panels stopped working, meaning drivers were only shown blue flags manually.

Speaking afterwards, Wolff accused rival engineers of failing to inform their drivers that faster cars were approaching to lap them.

This resulted in Antonelli being made to work harder than necessary, with the young Italian ultimately failing to pass Verstappen before the chequered flag.

“It’s just disgraceful from some of the Teletubbies engineers that sit on the pit walls of these teams not telling the drivers what is happening behind,” fumed Wolff.

“Overall, today I’m just not happy about the whole situation. When I calm down, I’ll be taking a solid gap in the Drivers’
Championship over the summer and a good gap in the Constructors’ Championship.

“That is credit to a fast car and a great team. And unlucky at times, like with the VSCs today again. But not good enough on the reliability.”

Reflecting on Russell’s disastrous start, Wolff added: “Yet again, we made a mistake on screwing George’s start. It’s just not acceptable and not good enough from us.

“A long way to go, but we need to find out what it was. There was too much input on the throttle that he didn’t give. We need to get on top of these things.”
