Dog owners reveal the ultimate dog walk – as top destinations listed | UK | News

A dog’s dream walk would last an hour and seven minutes, include 16 sniffing opportunities – and some water to splash in, according to owners. A poll of 1,800 dog owners found the ideal outing would either be in open fields, woodland or parks and involve sniffs at lamposts, tree trunks and flowers as well as the chance to meet around three canine companions along the way.

A selfless 38% said their dog’s enjoyment was a bigger priority than their own. But many admit they want walks where their dog will be safe (55%), it’s quiet and not crowded (37%) and has wide open spaces for their pet to run around (36%).

The research was commissioned by Animal Friends Pet Insurance, which has created a map of the UK’s best dog walking routes, making it easier to find walks that offer space and stimulation.

Jen Hipwell, head of veterinary services at the insurance company, said: “Walks are one of the best parts of life with a dog – a chance to spend time together, explore somewhere new and make the most of the summer safely.

“Every dog is different, so a great day out will look different depending on their age, breed, health, personality and confidence.”

Many owners admit convenience plays a major role in where they go, with 33% favouring routes that are close to home or have access to bins. However, 46% said they have become bored of doing the same walks with 30% believing their dog has too.

Eight in ten even went as far to say they have felt guilty about not being more adventurous.

Those polled by OnePoll.com said they’d be willing to travel an average of seven miles from home for a great trip with their pup that met all their needs, saying they were more likely to choose a walk if it was near dog-friendly cafes providing water and treats.

Weather conditions (61%), how hot the ground was for their dog’s paws (61%) and the likelihood of encountering other pooches and livestock (48%) were also other considerations before taking their pet out.

And while 36% felt very confident they’d know how to identify and avoid potential risks to their dog on walks like steep terrain, coastal hazards and livestock, 56% were only somewhat confident.

The top three destinations dog owners would like to travel to were the Lake District, New Forest National Park in Hampshire and the South West Coast Path in Devon and Cornwall.

Jen Hipwell, for Animal Friends Pet Insurance, added: “Before heading out, it’s always worth checking your route in advance, as well as the weather and any local conditions that could affect your plans, particularly during periods of hot weather.

“Pack for your dog’s needs, whether that’s plenty of fresh water, treats, a lead, a favourite toy or somewhere comfortable to rest.

“The map has been designed to help owners find a walk that suits their dog, so they can enjoy exploring somewhere new safely and confidently.”
