A young boy was raped and strangled to death by his friend’s father. A court heard how the eight-year-old victim’s friend was asleep on a bunk bed in the same room when he was attacked by his father.
The man, who cannot be named to protect his son, was handed a life sentence after being convicted of raping and murdering Daniel Jamneck. The court also heard how he was a repeat sex offender who had been allowed to remain free. As well as his jail term for raping and killing Daniel, he was also sentenced to 10 years for the rape of Caryn Brown, with the terms to run concurrently.
As reported by IOL, the Western Cape High Court heard how Daniel was raped and strangled to death during a sleepover at a friend’s house in Cape Town, South Africa, on June 15, 2023. He was sexually assaulted, bit and then murdered while his friend slept in the same room.
The attacker was also put on the National Register for Sex Offenders, barring him permanently from working with children, and prohibited him from possessing a firearm. Meanwhile, Maria Jamneck, Daniel’s mother, and Ms Brown, were broth granted the right to make representations to the Parole Board should he ever become eligible for release.
The court also heard Ms Jamneck’s victim impact statement, in which she described Daniel as “our absolute light”. She added that the trauma of the attack continues to affect her family every day since his death.
Juanita du Preez, a spokesperson for Action Society, a civil rights organisation based in South Africa, said: “Today’s sentence brings justice for Daniel and recognises the immense suffering endured by Maria, Caren and everyone whose lives have been shattered by this monster.
“Justice has finally been served. But we will continue our fight to expose the failures within the criminal justice system that allowed this accused to remain free and continue his crime spree, ultimately ending in Daniel’s death.”
She added that South Africans “deserve a justice system that identifies dangerous repeat offenders, acts decisively and protects innocent lives before another family has to endure this kind of unimaginable loss.”
According to the charity, the attacker had a prior rape conviction, had absconded from a court-ordered rehabilitation programme, and faced a subsequent attempted rape charge that was withdrawn before Daniel was killed.
