Russian President Vladimir Putin would be “ready to shoot down passenger jets in Europe” with his drones, a security expert said. After a runway was closed as a drone and a detonator were reportedly found near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig Airport in Germany, security expert Will Geddes told The Sun the event also posed a risk to commercial airports.

“The economic impact is signficant as anybody would imagine, but [the drones] being used as a delivery device for malintent, it is a huge concern,” Mr Geddes added.

These comments come after a suspected device was found near a parked Ukrainian Antonov cargo at Leipzig/Halle Airport late on Tuesday night.

German authorities reportedly classified the drone as a possible explosive device after it was found carrying an unknown substance and what was believed to be a detonator.

The German airport’s southern runway was closed while bomb disposal teams assessed the suspected device. Local police then added they were treating the incident as a state security matter.

Recently, Ukraine has been targeting oil refineries and other key Russian infastructures, including logistic hubs operated by Wildberries, an ‘Amazon-like’ Russian business. Leningrad Oblast governor Alexander Drozdenko said drones struck one of the company’s warehouses in the Krasny Bor region and Wildberries itself confirmed that its facility had been struck.

Ukrainian air force said Russia attacked by using 181 long-range drone strikes from Sunday to Monday.

Other reports also said five people were killed and six were injured in attacks within another industrial zone in Novosyolki.
