Adults born in ‘worst month’ never celebrate their birthday for 3 key reasons

One in three adults celebrating their birthday in January have scrapped their own party plans. Research involving 2,000 adults, including 250 January-born individuals, revealed man are convinced their friends won’t show up and decide to move their celebrations to a different month entirely.

A third (32%) of those who postponed or cancelled January birthday festivities did so fearing their nearest and dearest would pull out last minute, compounded by the fact that 35% of all respondents admitted to socialising less during January.

The study was commissioned by Madrí Excepcional 0.0% to herald the launch of its January Birthday Bar Tab, providing anyone born in January with complimentary 0.0% or 4.6% beers for themselves and a companion.

January-born actor and comedian Henry Rowley, who partnered with the beer brand, said: “My birthday in January always gets the short straw compared to my mates. Everyone’s skint, the weather’s miserable and Dry January is in full swing.”

“I’ve only ever celebrated my birthday twice in my adult life,” he added, “but this year I’m getting my mates together making up for lost years and celebrating with the help of the January Birthday Bar Tab.”

Research has revealed that 21% of January-born individuals have never celebrated their birthday as adults, whilst 36% feel they receive fewer gifts because of their birthday landing after Christmas; missing out on approximately £62 worth of presents.

But it’s not just those born in January who are say it’s the worst month, 42% of respondents agreed that January is by far the worst month to have a birthday. What’s more, 12% admitted to skipping a loved one’s January birthday bash.

Although 83% felt guilty about it, 56% said they were strapped for cash after Christmas and 31% blamed the cold and gloomy weather for not venturing out. Additionally, 19% were avoiding social occasions due to Dry January.

Nevertheless, 66% said certain factors would encourage them to go out for January celebrations. These motivators included quality time together, better non-alcoholic options, and having someone else cover the expenses.

The Madrí Excepcional January Birthday Bar Tab is running at BOXPARK venues in Liverpool, Shoreditch, Croydon, Wembley and Camden on Fridays and Saturdays in January and those eligible can sign up here while stocks last.

Sophie Mitchell, from the beer brand added: “Not all birthdays are created equal and January can be a tough month to bring people together.

“So we want to take the pressure off organising January birthday celebrations.

“Our January Birthday Bar Tab is all about giving people a simple reason to show up for their mates and make sure no birthday goes unnoticed.”
