Alex de Minaur is through to the Australian Open quarter-finals after a superb victory over Alexander Bublik. He will now face world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight.

After his previous match against Frances Tiafoe, De Minaur was interviewed by veteran tennis commentator Jim Courier. After congratulating him on his victory, Courier turned attention to his wedding with British tennis star Katie Boulter, who was sat in the crowd watching him Down Under. Boulter herself was knocked out in the first round by Belinda Bencic and her focus has shifted to supporting her fiancee.

Courier said: “We all know how much you want the big wins, but you already locked in a huge win this year. You and your fiancee are getting married this year. Congratulations to you and Katie. How involved are you planning to be in this wedding planning or are you gonna leave it to Katie?”

In a light-hearted, comical exchange, De Minaur responded: “Are you doubting me, Jim?”, before Courier hit back: “I’m definitely doubting you”, adding: “You’ve not been married. You don’t know. You’re about to become a 49 per cent shareholder of a really great company.”

De Minaur continued: “Honestly, the fact that we’re both tennis players and we’ve both got quite a busy schedule, we are doing as much as we can together. Yeah, I’ve been involved so far in some of the decisions – I’m sure when it comes to details of like napkins and flowers and decoration purposes – that’s not my forte, I’ll leave that to Katie.”

The world number six seed admitted that Boulter must be hating him after watching his latest exploits on the court, recognising how difficult it is watching a loved one. “Yeah, more than anything, I’m probably thinking how much she must be hating me as she’s watching the match and going through all those tough moments,” he said.

De Minaur has been open about their relationship previously, detailing the negative side, too. Last year, he admitted that it was difficult balancing his Wimbledon campaign with offering support for Boulter after she was knocked out in the second round. “There’s no real rule book that you can go on, but it’s not ideal. It’s not nice,” he said at the time.

“I felt for Katie, and I’ve been in those positions myself. It’s not easy by any means to, yeah, forget about it. It’s something that kind of stays with you. On my side, you know, there’s obviously the part of doing my best to comfort her and try to be there for her the same way she is there for me through the good stuff and the bad stuff.

“It definitely does have a little bit of impact on yourself, and you’ve got to do your best to try and have a mental reset and kind of shift your focus towards yourself and realizing that you do have a match the following day that you’ve got to prepare for, it’s not going to be an easy one, it’s going to be a battle. So yeah, it’s a lot of different aspects to deal with, which aren’t easy, and I think I can get better at, but that’s experience.”

The couple, who have been together since 2020, got engaged in December 2024. De Minaur gave some insight into what it’s like being a tennis power couple living in London: “It’s a local one for us. Over the years, we’ve spent more and more time here, so we’ve got a place.

“We try to keep things as normal as possible and we prioritise each other’s matches in the schedule. So if, let’s say, I’ve got a late one and she’s got an early one the following day, I’ll do my best to make sure that I get all my treatment done, everything done, and then basically just sneak into the room and try not to wake her up if she’s sleeping.”

De Minaur recently spoke about the prospect of having children. He told the Sydney Morning Herald: “I’m going to turn 27 next month, which is crazy to think about, and my life is going to keep on evolving. At some point, there is going to be a family and kids.” The Australian faces Alcaraz at the Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday, January 27.
