American annoyed after visiting Sainsbury’s for first time

An American documenting his holiday to London has been irked by one big difference between the US and UK.

Lawrence Johnson has been busy exploring the big smoke, visiting tourist attractions including the iconic Big Ben and Buckingham Palace as well as coming to grips with the three-pronged British plug.

Taking to TikTok, he says it’s ‘tragic’ that most buildings in England, including shopping centres, don’t have air conditioning – branding the muggy summer weather ‘uncomfortable’.

However, it was a trip to Sainsbury’s that riled Lawrence the most, and it appears most Brits are in agreement with him.

“I went here [and] the fruit was pretty good,” he said. “The water was nice, actually. One thing we have to talk about is your bottle caps: great juice, very annoying bottle cap.”

Lawrence was referencing a recent change to UK bottled beverages, where the cap remains attached to the bottle when you unscrew it.

The controversial design change was implemented to stop plastic waste following a European Union directive that was initially proposed in 2018 then officially adopted the following year with a strict dealine on July 3, 2024.

“I get the sentiment: you don’t wanna lose it, less littering etc,” Lawrence added. “But I promise this is this is messes up every drink I take… Don’t try to drink head on because it’s gonna hit you in the face, it’s just annoying.”

Thousands of Brits flocked to the comments section to express their outrage at the EU law, with swathes agreeing it’s a ‘stupid’ design.

“The bottle cap thing is new. We’re all annoyed about it!” raged one user. Another agreed, commenting: “We’re very upset about the bottle caps, okay! It’s a recent thing.”

A third added: “THE CAPS! I moan about these most days haha,” while a fourth penned: “You get used to the cap thing, you train your ring finger to just hold it back.”
