Angry Mason Greenwood sent off for dissent as Getafe given three reds | Football | Sport

Mason Greenwood was shown a straight card during Getafe’s nightmare 2-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday. A fiery altercation with referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez saw the Manchester United loanee immediately given his marching orders in a match which also saw two of his team-mates sent for an early bath.

Starting on the right-hand side, Greenwood let his feet do the talking in the early stages of the match at Coliseum Alfonso Perez. A sweeping 40-yard through ball to Juanmi was particularly eye-catching, even though the Spaniard failed to finish off the resulting chance.

Things went downhill for Getafe shortly before the interval, however. Juanmi was the first to be dismissed, picking up a second yellow card for a reckless aerial challenge, and Greenwood followed fewer than five minutes into the second period.

With referee Vazquez refusing to award a free-kick, Greenwood angrily turned to the official and waved his arms. The 22-year-old also appeared to say something before being shown a straight red for dissent, much to his bemusement.

The Bradford-born forward has been playing well on loan in La Liga, notching seven goal contributions in 15 matches. But the big clubs rumoured to be eyeing up a summer transfer are unlikely to be impressed with his conduct against Rayo, which led to the first red card of his senior career.

Damian Suarez was the third Getafe player to be sent off in the defeat, receiving one yellow while walking off the field as a substitute, and then a straight red for continuing to protest on the sidelines.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are among those rumoured to be keen on offering Greenwood a permanent deal. United reportedly want £40million, although a portion of the fee will go to Getafe under the terms of their loan arrangement.

Greenwood graduated from the Red Devils’ academy as a teenager and racked up 35 goals in 129 senior appearances before heading off to reboot his career in Spain.
