Annabel Croft points finger at Nick Kyrgios after Battle of Sexes | Tennis | Sport
Tennis commentator Annabel Croft believes Nick Kyrgios’ variety and touch made it difficult for Aryna Sabalenka during Sunday’s controversial Battle of the Sexes match. The Australian dominated proceedings with a commanding 6-3, 6-3 win – even incorporating some cheeky underarm serves into his repertoire.
Despite unleashing some spectacular winners and displaying fierce determination throughout the contest – Sabalenka could not deliver a win for women’s tennis on this particular night. The Dubai audience gave her a rousing reception though as Kyrgios sealed the straight-sets victory.
And former British number one Croft praised the entertainment value but admitted the contest did not quite reach the competitive level some expected. Speaking while working as a pundit for BBC Sport – Croft believes Kyrgios’ approach to the exhibition affected how it played out.
She said: “I think it didn’t quite live up to what I thought it might be. That was a lot to do with how he played the game. He did what he does on the tour generally.
“He is a very awkward customer for anyone. Slice, choppy forehands, slow balling, awkwardness. The ball was moving a lot, particularly on his serve.
“The way it moved in the air, you could see she was returning way outside the court. He was very smart in how he played. You felt like at any point he could dip into other gears.”
Sabalenka, meanwhile, immediately called for another opportunity during her post-match interview. The Belarusian appeared in high spirits despite the lopsided nature of her defeat and made it clear she would welcome another shot at the former Wimbledon finalist.
“I felt great, I think I put up a great fight,” she said. “He was struggling, he got really tired.
“I think it was a great level, I made a lot of great shots, moved a lot to the net, drop shots. Really enjoyed the show.
“Next time when I play him, I already know the tactics, his strengths and weaknesses, and it will be a better match for sure.
“I love to challenge myself and I’d love to play again.”
